Strategic expansion in Scotland
Clifton Wealth Partnership has strengthened its presence in Scotland after acquiring two independent financial planning firms, Cairn Independent and JRW. The transactions form part of Clifton’s ongoing regional expansion strategy.
The two firms add almost £150m in assets under management. Following the acquisitions, Clifton’s total AUM now exceeds £3.5bn.
Cairn Independent joins the group
Fife-based Cairn Independent was founded in 2011 by Robert Young. The firm has built a strong local client base and a reputation for personalised financial planning.
After a strategic review, the business concluded that joining a larger organisation would better support its long-term goals. Robert Young will retire following the acquisition.
Cairn’s operations director, Laura Young, will join Clifton Wealth Partnership in a newly created role. She will take on the position of regional financial planning support manager, strengthening Clifton’s operational presence in Scotland.
Laura Young said access to improved technology and systems played a key role in the decision. She also highlighted the alignment between the two firms’ cultures and their shared focus on putting clients first.
JRW acquisition supports continuity
Glasgow-based JRW was established in 2016 and advises around 300 clients. The firm now becomes part of the Clifton group.
Director Ian Walsh will remain involved as a consultant for a 12-month transition period. His continued involvement aims to ensure stability for clients and a smooth integration before his retirement.
Focus on culture and local client relationships
Anthony Carty, managing director of Clifton Wealth Partnership, said both firms reflect the type of advice businesses Clifton looks to support. He emphasised the importance of maintaining strong local client relationships while providing firms with greater scale and infrastructure.
He added that Laura Young’s appointment brings valuable expertise to the wider Clifton team. Clifton plans to deepen its engagement with financial planning firms across Scotland as part of its broader growth strategy.
Consolidation momentum continues
The acquisitions highlight ongoing consolidation across the advice sector. Many firms continue to explore succession planning, operational resilience and access to technology.
For buyers such as Clifton, selective regional expansion and talent retention remain central to building sustainable long-term growth.
