Foster Denovo has strengthened its presence in the North East after acquiring Shaun Carr Financial Services, adding another adviser to its growing regional business. The acquisition supports the firm’s strategy of expanding its wealth management division while continuing to build its Tyneside hub.
The latest Foster Denovo acquisition also highlights several themes shaping today’s financial planning market. Alongside continued consolidation, advisers are placing increasing importance on cultural fit, operational support and long-term opportunities when deciding whether to join a larger organisation.
Foster Denovo acquisition strengthens regional presence
As part of the transaction, Shaun Carr Financial Services has joined Foster Denovo’s wealth management division. Shaun Carr will become a Senior Partner within the business and will continue to operate from North Shields.
The acquisition brings approximately £53m of assets under advice and 157 client households into the group, further strengthening Foster Denovo’s presence across the North East. The business has continued to invest in growing its regional footprint, building on previous acquisitions within the area.
Carr explained that conversations with advisers from the former Wade Financial business played an important role in his decision. Wade Financial became part of Foster Denovo in 2023, and their positive experience provided valuable insight into what joining the group would involve.
Strategic rationale behind the acquisition
Carr said the increasing demands of regulation were another significant factor in his decision to join Foster Denovo. Access to a larger support team will allow him to spend more time focusing on clients while benefiting from the wider infrastructure available within the business.
His comments reflect the practical considerations many advisers face as regulatory responsibilities continue to grow. For some firms, becoming part of a larger organisation can provide additional operational support while allowing advisers to continue concentrating on delivering client advice.
Alongside its acquisition strategy, Foster Denovo is also investing in its wider business. The group is currently progressing its Symphony technology programme, which aims to embed agentic AI across its day-to-day operations.
Continued growth through acquisitions
This latest acquisition follows a series of transactions completed by Foster Denovo as it continues to expand nationally. The business, which also includes employee benefits consulting division Secondsight, now operates from 13 offices across the UK.
The group has also completed 26 internal practice buyouts, which continue to make a significant contribution to its overall earnings. Together, these initiatives demonstrate Foster Denovo’s focus on both external acquisitions and supporting succession within its own adviser community.
Commenting on the acquisition, Chief Executive Officer Roger Brosch said that recommendations from advisers who have already joined the business continue to reinforce the firm’s approach. He highlighted the importance of placing cultural fit at the centre of acquisition decisions and welcomed Shaun Carr to the group.
What this means for business owners
This acquisition demonstrates that business owners often consider far more than the financial aspects of a transaction. The experiences of advisers who have already completed a similar journey, together with the level of operational support available and the cultural fit of the acquiring business, can all influence decision making.
For owners considering succession planning or a future sale, this serves as a reminder that finding the right long-term partner can be just as important as agreeing the commercial terms of a transaction.
